SHAFLEY
William “Bill” Kenneth Shafley of London Ohio passed away peacefully on Friday, September 17, 2021 surrounded by his family.
Born June 9,1923 in Turtle Creek Pennsylvania, he was the son of Jacob and Ina (Shields) Shafley.
Bill served in the Army during WWII as an airplane mechanic, servicing C-46 cargo planes which transported troops and supplies “Over the Hump” in the Burma-China theater. Bill was known by his family and friends as a skilled machinist, mechanic, and master woodworker. He worked with the attention to detail of a designer and the mind of an engineer. There wasn’t a mechanical problem he couldn’t fix, or a tool he didn’t have. Bill retired from Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, where he worked for 22 years as a lab technician in the testing and development area. Even in retirement, Bill remained active with travel, gardening, and a range of projects including building furniture and toys for his family. Spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was very important to him.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Geraldine “Gerry” (Cline) Shafley, and his siblings Jacob, George, Edith, Charles, Helen, Joseph, and James. Survivors include son William Shafley II and his wife Barbara Rowles; daughter Carole Risbeck and her husband James Risbeck; grandchildren William Shafley III, Matthew Shafley, Michelle Shafley Smith, Matthew Risbeck, Michael Risbeck; great grandchildren Dylan, Isaac, Trent, Addison, Madalynn, and Jacob; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be scheduled at a later date.
The family is being served by the EBERLE-FISHER FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, 103 N. Main Street, London, where online condolences for the family may be sent to www.eberlfisherfuneralhome.com.
