HAYNES
Walter Richard “John” Haynes, age 74, formerly of Mount Sterling, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. Born on April 13, 1952, in West Jefferson, Ohio, John was a son of Walter Vernon “Bill” Haynes and Maxine (King) Haynes.
Growing up in Madison County, John was a proud 1971 graduate of The Plains High School in Mount Sterling. That same milestone year, he married the love of his life, Kathy (Rheinscheld) Haynes, on November 16, 1971. Together, they built a beautiful life, shared countless adventures, and stood side-by-side through almost 54 years of marriage.
Following graduation, John dedicated over 30 years of his life to General Motors. Known for his fairness, integrity, and being one to advocate for his peers, he proudly served as a UAW representative. He was honored to stand beside his fellow autoworkers and earned the deep respect of many friends and coworkers along the way.
John’s true labor of love was found at the racetrack. For the majority of his life, he was a passionate owner of harness racing horses. He loved the grit, the community, and the pure excitement of the sport. Whether he was spending early mornings at the barns or cheering his horses down the stretch, the track was a place where he found immense joy and camaraderie.
He was happiest when out on the road. To John, nothing compared to the rumble of his Harley’s engine, the feel of the open road, and the wind in his face.
Left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Kathy Haynes; sons Chris (Tracy) Haynes and Dexter (Dee) Haynes; grandchildren: Devon Haynes, Dakota (Emanuelle) Costales-Rodriguez, Mason Pauley, Molly Thackston, and Craig (Arabelle) Haynes; sister Vicky (Richard) Travis; nieces and nephews: Rick (Jenn) Travis, Jason (Julie) Travis, Katie Haynes, Morgan (James) Higgins, Nathan Haynes, Lindsey Haynes, and Bradley Haynes, Jr.; several great nieces and great nephews.
In addition to his parents Walter “Bill” and Maxine, John was preceded in death by his siblings Cathy Haynes and Brad Haynes.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, June 22, 2026, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM in the EBERLE-FISHER FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, 103 North Main Street, London, Ohio 43140.
