BURGESS

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Mrs. Lucille "Lucy" Marie (Shoemaker) Burgess, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend to many. Lucy passed away peacefully on Monday, February 10, 2025, in the Bluebird Retirement Community while in the arms of her family.

Following high school, Lucy married her forever sweetheart, Joe Burgess, on June 15, 1956. As a testament to their love, they have joyfully spent the past 68 years together raising their family with the same love and compassion that brought them together. Professionally, Lucy had worked as a bookkeeper for the former Yauger Monuments in London and Forrest Trucking in West Jefferson. A faithful believer, Lucy was a long-time member of the London Church of Christ in Christian Union. She enjoyed shopping and playing piano while singing. A true matriarch, she was excellent in the kitchen with both cooking and baking. No matter what was on the menu, her family knew they would always like whatever Lucy whipped up and always looked forward to the treats she would bake, particularly her outstanding cinnamon rolls. They also cherished family meals together at their favorite restaurant, Der Dutchman.

Lucy leaves behind a legacy of love through her adoring husband Joe Burgess; daughters Brenda (Stephen) Cordell and Joanna (Chris) Thomas, son Todd (Laura) Burgess; grandchildren: Christina (Dan) Doggett, Megan (Benjamin) Buckley, Nathaniel (Megan) Braxton, Joel (Rebecca) Braxton, John Burgess, and Jaelyn Burgess; great-grandchildren Madalyn, Lydia, and Avery Doggett, Adelyn, Malachi, Mathias, and Evelyn Buckley, Penelope, Oliver, Lena, and Miles Braxton, plus one on the way; uncle Russell Knisley; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Larry Shoemaker, and sister Dorothy Steele.

Lucy's family will receive friends for visitation on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the London Church of Christ in Christian Union, 180 West Center Street, London, Ohio 43140. An additional hour of visitation will be held at the church on Thursday, February 20, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A funeral service will commence at 11:00 AM with Pastor Lee Stanley officiating. Interment will follow in Somerford Township Cemetery.
