John T. Lloyd was born in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1938. He died on June 20, 2026. He is preceded in death by father and mother, John S. and Dorothy T. Lloyd, of Pittsburgh. He is survived by his sister Margaret Lloyd Trent of Dublin, OH, and his brother Thomas (Joyce) Lloyd of London, OH.
John graduated from Otterbein College with a Bachelor of Music Education; Duquesne University with a Master’s Degree in Music Theory; and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England. He spent 33 years teaching music in the Churchill/Woodland Hills School District in Pittsburgh. He taught chorus, orchestra, and general music. He directed 10 operettas; 8 school plays; and founded the high school Opera Workshop directing 10 productions.
For 11 summers he sang with the Chautauqua Opera Company singing in 68 productions of 41 different operas, operettas, and musical comedies and sang in Finland in the Savonlina Opera Festival. He was a soloist with the Mulberry Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Oratorio Society.
John served as organist at McGinnis Presbyterian Church in Pitcairn, PA. and at London First Presbyterian Church in London. OH, from 1995 to 2009 where he also sang in the choir from 2010 until the present.
He was the winner of the 1994 National School Orchestra Association’s competition for high school orchestra music. ”A Hectic Orchestra” (Published by Kjos Co.) was performed by the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra in 1998. Two of his additional compositions were performed by the St. John’s Chamber Orchestra Festival in Stockton, CA, in 2006. Choral compositions were performed in many locations. Orchestra compositions were performed at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, IL. He also conducted musicals in Somerset, England in 1994 and 1995.
To honor his wishes, there will be no memorial service.
