GRAY John "Smokey" Gray, 85, formerly of Mt. Sterling. died Thursday, October 12, 2017 in Darby Glenn Nursing Home, Hilliard. Born April 27, 1932 in Jamestown, Ohio; he was a son of John Walker and Mary Sofia (Moon) Gray. Smokey retired after 30 years with the State of Ohio Department of Agriculture as a supervisor with Weights and Measures. He was also a US Marine Veteran of the Korean War, a member of the Mt. Sterling VFW and belonged to the Scioto Ridge United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of 67 years Betty Jean (Gochenour) Gray; children Sue (Jon) (Gray) McClelland, Teresa Lynn Gray, Donna Lee (Gray) Long, John Walker Gray, II and Harold Eugene (Mary) Gray; grandchildren Andrew (Rebekah) McClelland, Jessica (Paul) Berick, Nicholas Gray (Lo Limbacher), Alexandra (Matthew) Stiffler, Justin (Esther) Gray, Haley (Michael) Carge, Madison Long, John Richard Gray, II, Shannon Riell and Patrick Riell; great grandchildren Mya, Graycen, Elijah and Emma; sister Emma Jean Hill; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and six sisters. The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent care received from the staff of the Bluebird Retirement Community, Darby Glenn Nursing Home and from Ohio Health Hospice. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Monday, October 16, 2017 at the Mt. Sterling United Methodist Church with Rev. Jay Moyers and Rev. Casey Wilson officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Pleasant Cemetery, Mt. Sterling. Friends may call at the church from 2-4 and 5-7 PM on Sunday at the church.
