EWART John Reed Ewart passed away peacefully, Thursday, October 18, 2013 at Sisters on Elm in London, Ohio. He was born on September 20, 1932 at home on Sycamore Road in Miller Township, Knox County Ohio, to the late Fred Letts Ewart and Isabelle Jones Ewart. John graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1950. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from December 1951 to December 1953, eventually working as a helicopter crew chief, and achieving the rank of corporal. Following his military service and honorable discharge, John attended The Ohio State University graduating with a BS in Agriculture in 1958 and later, a MS in Agriculture in 1966. Following his graduation from college in June 1958, John began his professional career as a 4-H Agent and later as an Ag Agent for the OSU Cooperative Extension Service in Madison County until December 1966. In the years following he worked in farm management, farm cooperative management, insurance and seed sales and agricultural banking. He later returned to his first love of Extension work serving as the Ag Agent for Dearborn County, Indiana until his retirement in December of 1997. John was particularly proud of his foreign service with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). In 1992 the USDA invited John and other agricultural experts to travel to Poland to advise the former Eastern Bloc Country's young farmers about modern crop and food production. A six month tour was extended to 15 months at the invitation of the Polish Government. He was well liked there because of his expertise and his willingness to share stories of growing up on an American farm. John was well known for his lifelong love of music. He sang in choruses and choirs in high school, college, the community, church and played trumpet, tuba, harmonica and string base. He was well known for calling square dances and was a member of the band "Tune Times", which played many 50-50 dances throughout the Madison County and surrounding area. One of John's greatest passions was singing barbershop style music. He was a member of several quartets and choruses, including the 4K's and the Music Men in London, the Dixie Lads in Mount Vernon, the Southern Gateway Chorus in Cincinnati. John was very active in the community and church and many will recall his huge smile preceding him. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho, Beta Chapter (The Ohio State University). He was a charter member of the London Kiwanis Club serving in many leadership capacities including President and District Lt. Governor. John was elected to serve as president of London's City Council from 1974-1980. At the time of his death, John was a member of London's First Presbyterian Church. Over the years, no matter where he was, he maintained a strong and active membership in a church congregation, serving in many leadership capacities, yet remaining humble to the Grace of God. Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his beloved first wife of 34 ½ years, Carolyn Kimber Ewart. John is survived by his beloved second wife, Caren Rea Ewart, by his children David (Carolyn Lohr) Ewart, Kathleen (Peter) DeSalvo, Patricia (Michael) Bryant, M. Eric Triebelhorn, R. Brian Triebelhorn, Kirsten (David) Witt, and his grandchildren Michael Ewart, Joseph Ewart, Kimber DeSalvo, Olivia DeSalvo, Reed Bryant, Harper Witt, Grey Witt and sisters Margaret Greer and Martha Robey and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, October 23 at the EBERLE-FISHER FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, 103 N. Main St, London (740-852-2345) from 4-7 PM. A funeral service and celebration of life will be held Thursday, October 24, at the First Presbyterian Church, 211 Garfield Ave, London (740-852-1215) at 11 AM, followed by a lunch and reception for friends and family. Burial will be at 11 AM Friday, October 25 at the Owl Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, 4044 Owl Creek Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050 (740-892-3000), followed by a lunch and reception for friends and family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the London, Ohio Kiwanis Scholarship Foundation, The Alpha Gamma Rho House Fund, Loving Care Hospice of London, Ohio, The Music Department of the First Presbyterian Church of London, Ohio, or to the Owl Creek Baptist Church of Mount Vernon, Ohio.
