BURGESS

Joe Vernon Burgess, a loving husband, patient father, adoring grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2025, in the Bluebird Retirement Community, at the age of 91, surrounded by his loving family.

Born September 13, 1933, in Greenup Kentucky, he was a son of Curtis Burgess and Lydia (Skeens) Burgess. Joe met his forever sweetheart, Lucille "Lucy" Marie (Shoemaker) Burgess following high school. The two wed on June 15, 1956, and have since spent the past 68 years together until the time of her passing just nine days ago on February 10, 2025. Their love truly knew no bounds, and they ensured to raise their family with the same love and compassion that united them together. Professionally, Joe had worked as a corrections officer at the London Correctional Institution where he also taught carpentry. A true workaholic, Joe never liked to remain idle on his days off, and therefore also served as a residential carpenter on the side. He was a long-time member of the London Church of Christ in Christian Union with his wife Lucy. Although his sudden passing has left a void in our hearts, we are comforted knowing that Joe and Lucy have been reunited in glory.

Joe leaves behind a legacy of love through his daughters Brenda (Stephen) Cordell and Joanna (Chris) Thomas, son Todd (Laura) Burgess; grandchildren: Christina (Dan) Doggett, Megan (Benjamin) Buckley, Nathaniel (Megan) Braxton, Joel (Rebecca) Braxton, John Burgess, and Jaelyn Burgess; great-grandchildren Madalyn, Lydia, and Avery Doggett, Adelyn, Malachi, Mathias, and Evelyn Buckley, Penelope, Oliver, Lena, and Miles Braxton, plus one on the way; sisters Betty Darlene Mihaly-Rockwell and Norma Jean Slone; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lucy, sisters Kathern Taylor and Martha Jane Burgess.

Joe's services will be held in conjunction with his wife Lucy at the London Church of Christ in Christian Union, 180 West Center Street London, Ohio 43140. A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2025, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM with Pastor Lee Stanley officiating.
