IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Hilda Marie
(Travis) Byerly
July 17, 1938 – July 13, 2025
BYERLY
Hilda Marie Byerly, 86, passed peacefully on July 13, 2025, in Wooster, Ohio. Born July 17, 1938, in Columbus, Ohio, Marie was the daughter of Ora Lee and Emma Jane (Jordan) Travis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Carl Byerly Jr.; brothers Delbert (Ollie) Travis, Donald (Ellen) Travis and Merle Travis; sisters Martha (Don) Osbourne, Arlene Travis, Mildred Derouaux and the daughter of her heart Cheryl Byerly.
Marie is survived by her brother-in-law John L. Byerly, sister-in-law Ethel Travis and children Phyllis (Duane) Thacker, Edith (Daniel) Pitcher and John E. Byerly. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews. Her loving neighbors of over 40 years--Darlene and Lloyd Cool, Della and Stanley Cook and Sue Logsdon--also held a special place in her heart.
Regardless of the many names she was known by--daughter, sister, aunt, wife, Mother, Mom, Grandma, Mawmaw, Mert, Marie, friend or neighbor--she always answered with a smile on her face and love in her heart.
She was especially proud of her family. The tears of joy on her face as she held each one for the first time, the quiet smile and gentle kiss given were always a sight to behold. Marie loved passionately, protected fiercely and possessed an unending resilience that lives within every one of her beloved family members.
Marie was an avid garage sale shopper, keeping the roads hot between her house and any sale she passed. She may or may not have been known to come to a screeching halt or go the wrong way down the road in her little red Toyota in order not to miss one. She enjoyed years of making ceramics, doing macrame and crocheting. She liked playing cards--euchre, gin rummy and pinochle were her favorites. Marie had a hidden sense of humor and a joyous laugh that wouldn't stop until tears rolled down her cheeks and she had a stitch in her side. She was famous for her selflessness literally offering to give whatever someone complimented to them including the coat off her back.
It is with great sadness that her loved ones face a future without her. She was our rock, our touchstone, our matriarch.
We will miss you. We will remember you. We will always love you.
