SMITH Harry Cecil Smith, Sr., 93, of London died at home on Sunday, May 25, 2014. Born July 30, 1920 in a log cabin in Micco, West Virginia, he was the son of Carrie (Lynch) and Dr. Arthur Archibald Smith, late of Clay, West Virginia. He graduated from Ohio University in 1939 at the age of 19, with a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences. Music was a lifelong passion; playing piano and singing, he shared this gift with his family. He earned a Master's of Education in Psychology from Temple University in Philadelphia, where he met Georgia, the love of his life. As a chemical engineer for the Ohio Fuel and Gas Company in Columbus, he supported his growing family, then returned to study Journalism at Ohio State University and was eventually retired from The State of Ohio, Division of Safety and Hygiene as staff writer of The Monitor magazine, Harry was a freelance writer for many magazines and wrote many articles for the Columbus Dispatch Sunday magazine. Some of his favorite articles were about his hobby of motorcycle stunt riding. A member of Capitol City Motorcycle Club, he performed for the Columbus Charity Newsies and the West Virginia Centennial and won the Ohio Motorcycle Stunt Riding Championship at the age of 56. When his youngest daughter, Carrie, ran track for London High School, he became an enthusiastic runner and triathlete from that time into his eighties. Always active, he practiced back-flips on his trampoline and rode the unicycle until the last few years slowed him down. Survivors include his loving wife, Georgia Adella (Francis) Smith; children Georgia Adele (Ken) Browne, Sylvia Claire (Jim) Blackburn, Harry Cecil Smith, Jr., Sandy June Holley, and Carrie Lynn (Mike) DiLeo.
