Gary "Richard" Butcher, age 74, went home to be with the Good Lord on December 22, 2022, after a long battle with cancer. He was born December 27, 1947. He grew up in Delbarton, WV and was the youngest of nine children. He is survived by his wife of 29 years Mrs. Katherine Raynell (Helterbran) Butcher, Grove City, OH. He also leaves behind the mother of his daughters, Rebecca R. Cooney, Jacksboro, TN.
He was preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Eula (Murphy) Butcher and siblings Ida Mae Errigo, Minnie "Ailene" Jeffrey, Wanda Jean Delong, Judy Hall, Susie Butcher Copley, Thomas "Macky" Butcher, and Linda Kay Fletcher.
Those left behind to cherish his memory are his daughters Lisa (Shane) Duke, Etna, Ohio and Laura Rikard, Kettering, Ohio; Step-Children Sherry (Donald) Allen, Columbus; Shane (Susan) Helterbran, Columbus; and Travis Helterbran, Galloway; his only surviving sibling Andrew Butcher, Gadsdon, Alabama; Grandsons Gary, Tory, Nikolas, Mathew, Stephen, Tristan, Dalton, Deilon, Ashton, and Mason; Granddaughters Lindsay, Lauren, Kaylie, Haley; and Great Grandchildren Memory, Tobi, Hunter, Madeline, Olivia, and Ryder. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins who all loved "Richard" dearly, and many friends and colleagues he met throughout his life. Gary loved all of his family and friends with his entire heart and anyone who knew him loved him dearly too. He will be greatly missed by all.
Gary was a Corrections Officer for the State of Ohio Department of Corrections for over 30 years. He worked at the old Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio until it closed in 1984. He also worked at the Lucasville Prison, Orient Correctional Institution, and he retired from Madison County Correctional Institution in London, Ohio. He was named Corrections Officer of the year two different times and made many long-time friendships with the officers he worked with over the years.
Gary loved to go camping with family when he was a younger man, cookouts and get togethers, dancing, and always looked forward to going "Down Home" to visit his family in West Virigina. He loved watching football, especially The Ohio State Buckeyes. He would always root for the Ohio teams, including the Browns and the Bengals, but he also had a love for The Dallas Cowboys.
Friends and family can visit on Wednesday, December 28th from 5 to 8 pm at Eberle Fisher Funeral Home, 103 N. Main Street, London, OH. Pastor John Meade Jr. will officiate the funeral service on Thursday, December 29th at 1 pm at Eberle Fisher Funeral Home, with a graveside service to follow at Sunset Cemetery, 6959 W. Broad St., Galloway, OH.
