PERRY Alice Irene (Greene) Perry of Lafayette, OH, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at SISTERS on N. Main St. Born January 24, 1926 in Buena Vista, OH, she was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and she attended the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Portsmouth. She was a member of the Lafayette United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Jennings Perry, in 1978; a daughter, Dawn Travis Beathard, in 2003; her parents, Bessie Lee (Miller) and George William Greene; and a brother, George Greene of Kettering. Alice had been employed by Doctor's West Hospital, and the Purex Corp. Survivors are 6 children, Kathy Worthen of Glendale, CA; Peggy Sutherland of Waterford, CT; John Mark Perry (Carol) of Lima, OH; Virginia O'Reilly of Charlotte, NC; Christine Perry of Lawrenceville, GA; Denise Leyshon (Grant Schmidt) of London, OH; 19 grandchildren, Brock (Traci), Serenity (Jake), Peter, Julie, Brian, Benson (Heather), Aaron, Linda, Holly, Matthew, Amber, Sara, Lindsey, James, Lee, Patrick, Dylan, Josh (Jen), and Ashley; 18 great-grandchildren; the new babies are Kane of Glendale, Jackson of Columbus, and Kiandra of London; sisters-in-law, Jean Perry and Helen Perry of Portsmouth, and Mary Greene of Kettering; good friends Eloise Egbert of Lucasville, Connie Blake of Grove City, Mildred Leyshon of Lancaster, and Byron Schmidt of Grove City. She loved her pugs Bambi, Rose, Francesca; her cats Pearl, Jessie, and Charles; and her golden retriever Chloe. She also would feed any stray cat in the neighborhood. Alice was an army wife for 23 years, living on bases in Virginia, Germany, Kentucky, Georgia, Hawaii, and Kansas. She was a strong woman, surviving many heartaches, but she never lost her sense of humor. Early in the mornings you would find her planting peony, rose of Sharon, irises, cone flowers, or evergreens (using her husband's WWII fox hole shovel). Quiet times would be sitting in the family room writing poetry, while watching the cardinals, finches, and hummingbirds. Always available to babysit a grandchild, she would surprise you with her delicious fudge, sugar pie, or Texas sheet cake just when you had that sweet craving. She listened to Sinatra early in the mornings. Late at night she would drink her Ovaltine and look at the world Atlas. She would reminisce about dancing to Rhapsody in Blue on her wedding night June 19, 1945. But, her favorite songs were "Color My World" by Chicago and John Lennon's "And So This Is Christmas." Every Saturday noon you could find her at Los Mariachi's with Grant and Byron eating her BLT. She had beautiful red hair which refused to be overshadowed by her white hair. The last hours of her life, she witnessed her great-granddaughter taking her first steps. She will be missed very much. Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM Friday, April 5, 2013 in the Lafayette United Methodist Church with Rev. Carolyn Peacock officiating. Interment will follow in Deercreek Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services. The family wishes to thank Dr. James Barr; the staff and residents at SISTERS; and the nurses of Loving Care Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Madison County, PO Box 777, London, OH 43140. Arrangements and services are under the direction of the EBERLE-FISHER FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, London.
